Every fall, before the first whistle blows and before the season officially begins, the Mercer Island High School Boys Water Polo team starts together—with a challenge.

They cross Lake Washington.

Athletes launch from Mercer Island, swim to Seattle, then turn around and run the I-90 bridge home.

It’s demanding. It’s unforgettable. And for generations of Islanders Water Polo athletes, it has become a tradition that defines what it means to be part of this team.

This year, while most of us will cross the lake by light rail or car, our athletes will take a different route.

The train takes the bridge. We take the water.

Our “Light Rail or Laps?” campaign is more than a fundraiser. It is an invitation for our community to invest in the next generation of student-athletes who are learning resilience, teamwork, accountability, and leadership through sport.

Your support helps fund the essentials that make the season possible:

  • Pool rental and practice time

  • Referees and game operations

  • Equipment and game supplies

  • Scholarship assistance for athletes who need help covering participation costs

Most importantly, your support ensures that no player is left behind because of financial circumstances.

Our goal is to raise $28,000 to support the 2026 season.
